    Consultancy

As fish hatchery technology developed in parts of the world such as the Mediterranean, Fusion Marine developed the necessary expertise and back-up, both in-house and through an extensive global network of consultants with practical, hands-on experience of commercial operations. Such a pool of expertise covers virtually every fish species currently being artificially spawned worldwide. Services offered can range from a full turnkey project to specific services as requested by clients. Full turnkey projects involve pre-feasibility and full feasibility studies, site assessment and selection, hatchery design and installation, as well as after sales service and if requested, staff training and project management for a predetermined time period.

    Water Supply Systems

Securing the right quantity of the right quality water is fundamental for ensuring the success of any hatchery operation. With their extensive experience in the water and gas industry, deriving from the parent company, Fusion Marine is uniquely placed to advise and put in place such systems for hatchery projects. The range of possibilities is extremely wide and the final design and installation has to depend not only on the fish species being farmed, but also on the geographical location and the potential water source. This latter could be fresh, salt or brackish water, open water or underground source; the use of borehole water is becoming commonplace due to its stable temperatures and its pathogen-free nature.

    Systems Refurbishment and Upgrade

Advances in hatchery technology and changing market trends result in the necessity to constantly upgrade hatchery facilities. This need becomes particularly acute when a change of species being produced becomes necessary. Although there are significant common requirements for most marine finfish species, specific modifications are always required for different species. In extreme cases, complete renovations are necessary.

    Production

Consequent upon the establishment of live food production facilities on a commercial scale for sea bass and sea bream, advances in the hatchery technology for other marine species rapidly followed. Groupers, Asian sea bass, rabbit fish, red snappers and pompanos are some of a wide range of species that are currently produced in commercial hatcheries. Fusion Marine are closely involved in these as well as developing technologies for new species.

Egg quality plays a vital role in the success of any hatchery operation. Professionally designed and managed broodstock facilities ensure good quality broodstock, which in turn produces the required optimal quality eggs.

Hatchery technologies took a giant leap forward in the last two decades with the commercialisation of sea bass and sea bream fry production in the Mediterranean. The scaling up to commercial levels of the production of lives feeds, ie algae, rotifers and artemia underpinned these developments.

Egg hatching and larval rearing of marine fish species is normally carried out in tanks up to a weight of 1-2 grams. Subsequent prefattening of these fingerlings can then be carried out either in the tanks or in purpose designed cages.
