Shetland yacht club takes delivery of versatile pontoon

A Shetland yacht club has taken delivery of a 12m pontoon that will prove invaluable in attracting visiting yachts.

Manufactured by Oban-based Fusion Marine, the pontoon for Lerwick Boating Club was supplied by local marine and engineering company, Ocean Kinetics Ltd.

Constructed from environmentally friendly recycled plastic and tough polyethylene, the pontoon will enhance the berthing access for visiting yachts to Lerwick and will also prove useful during yacht race events.

According to John Henderson, managing director of Ocean Kinetics, a major attraction in this design of pontoon is its versatility. They can easily be dismantled and stored during the winter, and they are also good at coping with rough weather, being able to flex with the motion of the waves.

“These pontoons are perfect for the landing of small and medium-sized vessels,” he says.

“Their tough construction keeps maintenance costs down. They also offer excellent stability and can be adapted for a wide variety of situations.”

When in situ, the pontoon will lie along one side of the quay at Lerwick Boating Club, with the seaward side secured by clump anchors. 

Iain Forbes of Fusion Marine says this type of pontoon has proved extremely popular, with many having been sold in remote rural locations.
